Hot dogs, handshakes and a heat wave

Messages From The Party

As we approach a tough election season, it's good to know that Illinois Democrats can really take the heat.

That was proved once again as dozens of DPOE members, supporters and politicians from across the region braved temperatures in the 80s to turn out for Evanston's July 4 celebration. The DPOE's traditional barbeque, held before Evanston's Central Street parade, attracted a variety of elected officials and candidates including Rep. Jan Schakowsky, U.S. Senate nominee Alexi Giannoulias, State Sen. Jeff Schoenberg, State Rep. Robyn Gabel and State Treasurer nominee Robin Kelly.

The barbeque, organized by Finance Chair Ellen Collar, was hosted by member and Evanston Alderman Mark Tendam.

After celebrating the nation's independence with an all-American feast of hot dogs and potato salad, candidates and community members alike marched in the parade carrying the new DPOE banner. Gov. Pat Quinn, State Rep. candidate Daniel Biss and Cook County Board president candidate Toni Preckwinkle were also on hand to talk to voters and shake hands.
